Where to stay in Toronto: the 5 best Hotels

In this post we tell you in detail which are the best areas to stay in Toronto , and what you can expect in each of them. The vast majority of these are clustered in the city centre or around it.

The best areas to stay in Toronto

1. Downtown, the best area to stay in Toronto

Downtown is the heart of the city . Many of the main attractions are located here , it is an ideal place for shopping, enjoying good restaurants, and it also has a good range of leisure activities.

To begin with, we must mention the CN Tower, which was completed in 1976 and was 553.3 m high , the tallest free-standing structure in the world until 2007.

Visitors can look out over the city from 1,150 feet up , dine in the revolving restaurant and test their mettle on the tower’s Edgewalk (only suitable for those with a good tolerance for heights).

When you’re walking through Old Toronto, be sure to visit the Royal Ontario Museum, a treasure trove of historical and natural wonders.

Another popular place to visit in the area is the St. Lawrence Market which features over 100 vendors and offers everything from fresh fruits and vegetables, cheeses, meats and homemade baked goods to antiques and artisan goods.

After a stroll through the market stalls, why not visit Ripley’s Aquarium , which features 10 different galleries, 450 different species and more than 20,000 aquatic animals?

There’s also the Art Gallery of Ontario , famous for its continuous rotation of top-notch exhibitions.

In downtown Toronto, entertainment is the order of the day, and its offerings include theatre and shows.

For film lovers, the Lightbox, home of the Toronto International Film Festival, offers year-round screenings of independent, blockbuster and classic films. Another must-see address is the impressive Film Reference Library.

Comedy fans won’t want to miss Toronto’s premier comedy club, Second City , which has hosted the likes of Tina Fay, Bill Murray, Amy Poehler, Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell. (Visitors can even sign up for improv workshops and classes.)

And for the most theatre-loving, there is the Winter Garden Theatre , where you can see shows such as The Phantom of the Opera and Wicked.

Another attraction of this area is the possibility of shopping. For this you should not miss the exclusive shopping district of Bloor Street , as well as the enormous Eaton Centre shopping centre .

In terms of accommodation, there are many hotels, hostels, and apartments for holiday rental . The offer in all price ranges is wide, however, as it is one of the most popular areas to stay in Toronto, the average is higher than in other neighbourhoods.

2. Chinatown, a central neighborhood ideal for experiencing the essence of Asia

Founded in 1878, the vibrant Chinatown neighbourhood has an identity all its own and is a perfect area to stay in Toronto for those who, like me, are fans of Asian food and also want to be in the heart of the city.

Here you can explore the rich world of Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Vietnamese cuisine, with restaurants ranging from traditional to fusion, and plenty of Asian markets and shops.

Spadina Avenue is full of fresh produce, souvenirs and special herbal remedies, plus plenty of street food stalls for a quick bite to eat along the way.

Chinatown hosts two notable festivals each year: the Toronto Chinatown Festival and the Chinese New Year celebration.

The Toronto Chinatown Festival features traditional and modern Asian dance groups, solo musicians and marching bands, live performances, and all kinds of Asian food, art and fashion.

Although it is possible to find accommodation in Chinatown, the offer is quite limited . This is not a problem since this neighborhood is inserted in the larger area that makes up Downtown, an area with plenty of options.

3. Financial District & Entertainment District, where to stay in Toronto to go out

Both districts are neighbours and by staying in either one you can enjoy the best of each with a short walk.

The Financial District, one of Canada’s most important financial and business centres , has been one of Toronto’s busiest areas since its relocation from Montreal in the 1960s.

Choosing to stay in Toronto has huge advantages. This centrally located area is close to many major attractions and plenty of clubs, bars and restaurants.

Here visitors can admire the impressive architecture of buildings such as Royal Bank Plaza, Brookfield Place and Union Station , and dine at high-end restaurants.

Visitors to the Financial District won’t want to miss the nearby Hockey Hall of Fame , a fun, family-friendly museum dedicated to the history of ice hockey.

The Entertainment District , on the other hand , is often difficult to know where one ends and the other begins. It is an ideal place to go out to dinner, and then have a few drinks in its many bars or go out dancing until the early hours of the morning.

The entire area comprised of these two neighborhoods is home to a good selection of luxury and boutique hotels , making it the perfect luxury destination during your stay in Toronto.

RECOMMENDED HOTELS IN ENTERTAINMENT AND THE FINANCIAL DISTRICT

4. Harbourfront, where to stay in Toronto for families

Situated on the picturesque shores of Lake Ontario, the Harbourfront area offers stunning views of Toronto and a unique experience for visitors looking to live like a local.

Harbourfront is an especially ideal place to stay in Toronto for families as in addition to being centrally located, the area offers parks, beaches, trails and events to keep all members of the family entertained.

Harbourfront Centre is known as the hub of Toronto’s waterfront, with food, art and music events throughout the year, especially in the warmer seasons.

From this point you will have easy access to boat rentals and ferries that take visitors to the Toronto Islands.

Meanwhile, the pubs and restaurants on the waterfront offer the best views of Lake Ontario.

And for those traveling with children, a must-see attraction is Centreville Amusement Park , which features a petting zoo, a hedge maze, a splash park, a haunted lighthouse, and a charming Edwardian carousel built in 1907.

Another attraction in the area worth visiting is The Power Plant, a contemporary art gallery that turns its artificial pond into a fantastic skating rink.

If your trip coincides with the summer months, you can enjoy one of Harbourfront’s beaches , from the smallest at HTO Park to the largest Sugar Beach (easily recognizable by its bright pink umbrellas).

The Harbourfront area is also popular for cycling and hiking , and tandem and ATV rentals are available on Centre Island.

All of this makes this area one of the best places to stay in Toronto for everyone, but especially for families with children.

5. Yorkville, the best place to stay in Toronto for shopping

Located at the intersection of Yonge and Bloor in downtown Toronto , this neighbourhood is known for its trendy boutiques, cafes and restaurants , and for its “Mink Mile” of Bloor Street, famous for its galleries and design studios.

With its elegant tree-lined streets and charming Victorian mansions, Yorkville offers visitors an exceptionally picturesque experience during their stay in Toronto.

Art lovers and shopping addicts will find Yorkville an area with plenty of appeal. Not only that, there are also some interesting sights to see from a tourist point of view.

The Gardiner Museum , Canada’s national ceramics museum, was established in 1984 and offers a specialized insight into the ceramics-making process as well as its role in various civilizations throughout history.

Shoe devotees won’t want to miss the Bata Shoe Museum , which houses the world’s most extensive and detailed collection of footwear and related objects. It boasts a collection of over 13,000 items spanning nearly 5,000 years of history.

Yorkville Park is particularly interesting. It is designed with different sections that represent the diverse landscapes of Canada,

A special point of interest is the 650-ton rock on display in the park, which comes from the Canadian Shield, a geographic area located in eastern and central Canada and is more than a billion years old.

Yorkville hotels are as stylish and luxurious as the neighborhood itself, and if you don’t mind spending a little extra on your accommodation, you’ll definitely enjoy the area.

Hilton Honors vs Marriott Bonvoy | Which Is Best for Your Trip?

If you travel a lot, you often stay in hotels and know the advantages and disadvantages of large chains, motels or small boutique hotels. One advantage of the corporations is their bonus programs; frequent sleepers are rewarded with points and benefits. Alongside ALL Accor Live Limitless , Radisson , Wyndham and Best Western Rewards, Hilton and Marriott are leaders with their programs. Both have strengths such as the broad portfolio of different brands and the increasingly dense network. Both Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Status Levels Comparison: Hilton Honors vs Marriott Bonvoy

One of the big differences between the two programs is the status levels. While Hilton only has Silver, Gold & Diamond, Marriott offers five official levels. Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Platinum are roughly comparable, although Hilton has the edge here. Firstly, you can reach this level after just 20 stays or 40 nights per year – with Marriott it has to be 50 nights. Theoretically, you could get both status cards with 70 nights, but you would have to consistently only sleep at Hilton and Marriott and at least stay at Hilton for a maximum of 1 night, as you can get status faster with the stays here.

Another advantage of Hilton is the credit card . Anyone who has a VISA from Hilton Honors gets Gold status without any activities. This “shortcut” is also available to American Express Platinum holders , and as a benefit you can get Gold level with both Honors and Bonvoy. In comparison, Hilton is once again ahead here, because they already give you breakfast ( or credit in the USA ) and lounge access if you are upgraded to Executive.

Not all frequent flyers stay in hotels 70 times a year, so you should carefully consider where you book and collect points. First and foremost, your status and the points you collect should really bring you useful benefits. If you stay a lot of nights, you could focus on Marriott and maintain your status with Hilton using your credit card.

Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy

Hilton or Marriott Hotel | Neither?

Even if you have to sleep away from home a lot, you don’t necessarily have to stay in a hotel run by one of the two major providers. There are alternatives from other chains, no-name hotels, guest houses, motels or private accommodation. Here you’ll be more likely to be surprised if you’ve never seen the accommodation before, but it’s easier to find lower prices.

The programs are also cost factors that have to be paid for. In some cases, the added value is minimal, and some bonus systems are complex and opaque. If you have found a suitable program and also use promotions, for example, you can definitely get more out of it.

Is Hilton number one?

There is a lot to suggest that Hilton is the favorite. Gold status is relatively easy to obtain and it brings noticeable advantages. In recent years, the network in Germany has been expanded significantly, and the number of affordable labels in particular has increased significantly. Hilton Honors is running a permanent promotion, and you can currently get up to 2,500 points on top for every stay.

At Marriott, the path to Platinum status is a little longer; in Germany, there is no other option than a credit card or the possibility of achieving status with a minimum spend or stays. There are also promotions; there is currently a very exciting campaign running: Marriott Bonvoy counts the nights you stay twice until April and adds 1,000 points to it – for each night. However, the promotions at Bonvoy also tend to take a break for a few weeks or months.

Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy: Which is your favorite hotel program? | Frankfurtflyer Comment

I currently have a high status with both chains, but this is unlikely to be permanent. If I had to choose, I would probably go with Hilton. With the pandemic came the goodwill offers, after my Hilton Diamond was extended, I focused on Marriott and, thanks to the lower requirements, also got a status there.

This has made me very dependent and I specifically look for brands from both companies. There are actually some really nice hotels from other providers. I have an account with all the other chains, but I have no or very low status there. If a nice hotel can be booked on the Frankfurtflyer Hotels portal , this is a good way to make a reservation there. You get a lot of benefits through special rates – even without status. You still collect points.

Visiting Paris: the must-do activities in the capital

In which neighborhoods can you see the Eiffel Tower?

Day or night, in the sun or in the rain: this is what we want to see. The Eiffel Tower is the queen of the capital and, for many, it is impossible to go to Paris without being able to admire it. So the ideal way to do it properly is to get a room with a view.

Many Parisian hotels offer rooms with views of the Eiffel Tower, although you often have to leave a small bill. Since the Iron Lady is located in the 7th arrondissement, it is still from there that it is best seen. The hotels on Rue de Grenelle, Rue Saint-Dominique, and Avenue de la Bourdonnais are particularly well located. But elsewhere, then?

In the 15th arrondissement, hotels located near the Champ de Mars and Avenue de Suffren often offer views of the Eiffel Tower. In the 16th arrondissement, it is better to find a room on Avenue Kléber or Rue de Passy. In the 8th, we aim more for Avenue Montaigne and hotels near Place de l’Alma. In the 1st arrondissement, some hotels near the Louvre and Rue de Rivoli can offer partial views of the Eiffel Tower. As well as those located near the Luxembourg Gardens, in the 6th arrondissement. And, finally, some high-rise hotels can also offer this type of view at La Défense.

How to get around Paris?

Getting around Paris can easily become hell if you come with your own vehicle. The public road transport network is well developed, which makes it a wise solution. The Paris metro has 16 lines, running from 5:30 a.m. to around 1:15 a.m. The RER has 5 main lines. And the Tramway has no less than 10 lines, which mainly serve the outskirts of Paris. Of course, the bus network is also extensive and covers the entire city, day and night.

To get around Paris, the youngest prefer to rent a Vélib’ or electric scooter. But it is also possible to call a taxi or a VTC. On the Seine, it is the Batobus that we take. This river shuttle allows you to travel along the Seine, with stops near the main tourist attractions.

Paris offers endless activities beyond the usual landmarks. In addition to iconic sites like the Eiffel Tower and Louvre, visitors can explore lesser-known spots like the Montmartre vineyards, the eerie catacombs, and even a Marie-Antoinette-themed escape game. Neighborhoods such as the 7th, 15th, and 16th arrondissements offer stunning Eiffel Tower views from select hotels. Navigating Paris is best via public transportation, with extensive metro, tram, and bus networks. Alternative options include renting Vélib’ bikes, electric scooters, or using the Batobus river shuttle along the Seine. The city is ideal for both traditional and unique Parisian experiences.

When is the best time to travel to Istanbul?

The best times to travel to Turkey are autumn and spring. So, ideally, you should book your tickets from March to June, then from September to October. In summer, the temperature can reach up to 30°C and it is not always easy to walk and visit the country in such heat. Not to mention that the summer period is also the most touristic season for the country. The most touristic areas are therefore black with people. The rest of the time, there are fewer tourists and the temperature is ideal.

From March to May, temperatures range from 15 to 20°C. The crowds are smaller, and it is a perfect time to admire the tulips in bloom. From September to November, the weather is similar and tourists have often finished their summer vacations. In the parks and gardens, the autumn foliage is particularly pleasant to look at. In addition, at the end of October, hotel and flight prices start to drop and it is a great time to get a good deal. And if you like snow? Then don’t hesitate, and fly to Istanbul in the middle of winter.

When is the best time to travel to Istanbul?

What is the budget for going to Istanbul?

The budget for a trip to Istanbul obviously varies depending on the length of stay, the type of accommodation chosen and the activities planned. However, you can expect a budget of around 200 euros for a round trip in economy class, departing from France. Then, you will need to count between 30 and 70 euros per night in a mid-range hotel and more than 250 euros per night in a luxury hotel.

Once settled in, the cost of living in Turkey is lower than in France (about 37% lower). But Istanbul remains one of the largest cities in the country, and therefore one of the most expensive. For a backpacker trip, you will need to budget around 20 euros per day. For a more comfortable trip with a few good restaurants and activities, then you will need to budget 50 to 70 euros per day and per person. But if you look hard enough, you can always find the best deals for a low-cost trip.

What are the best areas to stay in Istanbul?

Istanbul is a vast and diverse city, with many neighborhoods with different advantages. Obviously, here, everything comes down to individual preferences.

Sultanahmet

History buffs and culture vultures will prefer to head to the historic heart of Istanbul: Sultanahmet. Ideal for those visiting the metropolis for the first time, this district is home to the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace.

Beyoglu

The Beyoğlu district is also very culturally rich, and is located north of the Golden Horn. It is perfect for travelers looking to go out after dark as it has many bars, theaters and restaurants. Along Istiklal Avenue, you will also find many fashion, music and book stores. Perfect for those looking for entertainment.

Besiktas

The Beşiktaş district has a lively and fairly youthful atmosphere. It is popular with students and offers many cafes and restaurants.

Nishantasi

For a chic and trendy stay, Nişantaşı is where you can find accommodation for a few nights. This district is often compared to a mini-Paris and is full of designer boutiques and art galleries. It is perfect for travelers looking for a cosmopolitan and high-end experience.

Ortakoy

The Ortaköy district is known for its cafes and shops. It offers magnificent views of the Bosphorus Strait and Bridge. Here, you can browse flea markets and art galleries. This district is perfect for those looking for a bohemian and relaxed atmosphere.

Uskudar

Finally, the Üsküdar district is rather traditional and historical. There is the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque and the Maiden Tower. But also many local markets for an authentic atmosphere. This district is ideal for lovers of less touristy historical sites.

What are the must-do activities in Istanbul?

Istanbul, with its rich history and vibrant culture, offers many must-see attractions. Here are the top activities that you should definitely not miss during a stay in Istanbul:

  • The Hagia Sophia , famous for its immense dome and Byzantine mosaics.
  • The Blue Mosque, known for its six minarets and beautiful blue ceramic tiles.
  • The Grand Bazaar, which stands out as one of the oldest covered markets in the world.
  • The Archaeological Museum, which has an impressive collection of artifacts from different civilizations, including sarcophagi and ancient sculptures.
  • Turkish baths, an essential experience for relaxation, like at the Hammam of Çemberlitaş or Süleymaniye.
  • Topkapi Palace , former main residence of the sultans.
  • The Galata Tower, to enjoy a 360° panoramic view of the city.
  • The Balat district, which stands out for its colorful facades, is the former Jewish quarter of Istanbul.

How to get around Istanbul?

Getting around Istanbul is quite convenient thanks to its extensive public transport network and other transport options. But to enjoy it, you still need to get the essential Istanbulkart transport pass. The latter can be purchased directly at the most important metro, bus or tram stations. Some hotels also sell them. Thanks to this pass, on which you deposit the desired amount, the cost of the trips is slightly lower than the initial price.

In Istanbul, the ideal is still to get around on foot. For longer journeys, we opt for the metro, which has now become the preferred means of transport for Istanbulites. There are now seven metro lines, which cover most of the metropolis. The tram has 4 lines, including the T1 which serves the main tourist spots in Istanbul. As for the bus, there are more than 500 lines across the city to reach the most distant places.

The best excursions to do around Istanbul

Although Istanbul is big enough to occupy several days, it is of course possible to push the walls to discover the rest of the country. From the city and in a fairly simple way, it is possible to participate in these excursions:

  • Cruise on the Golden Horn: for a day and aboard a boat, you can admire the banks of the Golden Horn with its mosques and old houses.
  • Belgrade Forest: Located 40 minutes away by car, Belgrade Forest is a green lung in the middle of the city. It is ideal for jogging sessions or lovely walks under the trees.
  • Princes’ Islands: Less than 1.5 hours away by boat, the Princes’ Islands are perfect for a day trip. Each of them is idyllic and can be visited on foot or by bike.
  • Sapanca: This charming village is located on the shores of Lake Sapanca, about 1.5 hours drive from Istanbul. You can have a picnic there and enjoy the water activities offered on the lake. And, nearby, you can also discover the picturesque village of Maşukiye.
  • Bursa: The former capital of the Ottoman Empire is located about 2 hours by ferry or bus from Istanbul. It is home to the Grand Mosque Ulu Camii and the cable car to Mount Uludağ.

All of these tours, although there are plenty more, offer varied options to escape the hustle and bustle of Istanbul and explore natural landscapes, beaches and picturesque villages.

Formalities for traveling to Istanbul from France

For French and Swiss nationals, it is necessary to have a valid identity card or passport to travel to Turkey. No visa is required, therefore. On the other hand, the stay cannot exceed 90 days on Turkish soil.

For Belgians, the rule is not the same. Indeed, they must obtain a visa issued upon entering the country after presenting their passport. This visa costs 10 euros, and is purchased directly at the counter before passing through the border police.

You now have all the keys in hand to fly to Turkey and discover Istanbul for a few days.
